The size of each drum is determined by its membrane. The maker selects a frame to fit it. Our work has included drums up to one metre in diameter.

A large drum is an exception to the workshop’s usual course of work. It appears when hide preparation yields a membrane of the right size without defects. Such instruments are usually made once or twice a year. The maker selects a suitable ready-made frame for the successful membrane.

The membrane determines the size

A large drum begins with suitable hide. The workshop keeps ready-made frames in different sizes. After soaking and preparation by hand as rawhide, it becomes clear what membrane can be obtained; the maker selects a frame to fit it and immediately stretches the hide.

Each successful large membrane becomes the foundation of an individual instrument. We offer drums that have already been made. The set is created for the selected instrument.

A case to fit the drum

The drum rests in the Altai. An individual leather case is then made for it. The finished drum may be in the Altai or already in Spain; delivery is agreed personally.

Acquiring an instrument

The workshop sets an individual price for each drum. While the set and delivery are being prepared, you can discuss a purchase or offer a higher price. The period for offers and the terms are agreed personally.

An ALTAU drum made according to shamanic traditions

Our principal 60 cm drum can be purchased ready-made or made after payment. It comes as a complete set with a leather case, three beaters and a passport.
